SUMMARY: This position is responsible for care of animals at the Pacific Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) - Animal Care Facility (ACF) by providing exercise, interaction, love, food and grooming. The Vet Assistant Technician (VAT) assists the Registered Vet Technicians (RVT) for the animals, medical tasks keep PAWS -ACF clean and maintained. The VAT also supports the RVTs by handling the animals, restraining them during the administration of medicines. Works jointly with RVTs to receive animals and complete and document intake protocols. Serves visitors to the animal shelter and supports volunteers and staff in completing other activities, such as adoptions. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Cleans and maintains dog kennels, cat enclosures, exercise yards and all areas of the shelter. Increases quality of life through enrichment for both cats and dogs. Delivers animals to veterinarians or other shelters for medical care, treatment, euthanasia or placement, if needed. Supports preparation of shelter documentation and reports as required Works jointly with Registered Veterinary Technician (RVTs) to perform intake procedures with animals. Follows medical and behavioral protocols assigned by the Veterinarian or Registered Veterinary Technician Follows disease and quarantine protocols set by Veterinarian or Registered Veterinary Technician Alerts Veterinarian or RVT with all behavior or medical concerns immediately and follows treatment protocol set by Shelter Manager, Veterinarian or RVT. Maintain daily log of ACF activities Ensures a positive customer service experience for all customers, volunteers and co- workers. Works and completes shifts as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned by management. Exercise the animals. Assist veterinarians and vet technicians with lab work. Clean, sterilize, and maintain kennels, operating rooms, examining rooms, cages, and surgical equipment. Comfort and restrain pets during examinations and care. Requirements High school diploma or general education degree. Associates degree a plus. Certification from an approved VAT program or passing of a MedCerts program. Minimum of one-year experience working with dogs and cats, preferably in a shelter environment Computer skills required: comfort with entering data into software packages and viewing reports Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Customer service skills.
